Starting a nonprofit is a project of the heart but requires that federally guidelines be followed and implemented. Nonprofit work is different from private practice in that it is not a solo act. Building a fully functional nonprofit requires a team of like minded individuals willing to support a unified mission.  This presentation will take you through the foundations of establishing a nonprofit and basic operating expectations.  Additionally, this presentation will discuss the value of establishing nonprofit organizations as a public health entity to support breastfeeding inequities, the social determinants of health, and other aspects of maternal and child health.

This presentation will walk the learning through the process of establishing a 501c3 nonprofit organization to support breastfeeding and maternal child health through the lens of public health.  We will touch on the set up of a nonprofit organization, the structure and organization and initiatives.  Learns will also be provided with information on the social determinants of health, community support, and the public health role of the lactation consultant.

  • Explain breastfeeding and human lactation from a public health standpoint
  • Compare and Contrast a nonprofit model and for profit model in community care
  • Define social determinants of health and their connection to lactation
